Let’s Make It Short
Let’s Make It Short

Once the weather starts getting warmer many of us may instantly reach for our favorite flowy dresses but as far as summer staples go, we often forget shorts. To be fair there are many different types of plus size shorts for women, and figuring out what to wear with them can take a bit of trial and error so it makes sense that these aren’t considered to be much of a summer style fail-safe as sundresses are.
But shorts are perfect for any summer activity you can think of—from rooftop parties, a night out with friends, a stroll down the beach boardwalk to even days at the office. Here are just a few types of this timeless summer staple that we’ll be buying this year.
Bermuda Shorts
I’m the kind of person who will wear skinny jeans well into summer but there comes a time that it is just too hot for full-length jeans. These are the moments that I reach for a pair of Bermuda shorts as these fit like a traditional skinny jean throughout the length of the thigh. Usually stopping at the knee, if not a little bit over, the length of this short is great for anyone who wants to wear shorts without exposing too much of their legs.
If you’re going on vacation aboard these are definitely the shorts to pack as they are long enough that you don’t have to worry about potential chub rub as you go sightseeing or running to rides at your favorite theme park with the family.
This is not to say that you can’t wear this plus size summer style to work as well. For a more on-trend and chic office-appropriate look, go for a dark wash or solid black option, like these Ashley Bermuda shorts, tuck in a lace trim cami, throw on a lightweight blazer and strappy sandals. Don’t forget your tote bag to carry all of your office essentials such as your laptop, and you’ll be set to conquer that warm and humid commute in style.
Boyfriend Shorts
The boyfriend shorts are a silhouette that is fairly new even for me. Though shorter than Bermuda length, you don’t have to worry about these being too short. It is a slouchy-yet-stylish fit usually with an affixed cuff that gives it a vintage, almost lived-in look that’s perfect for laid-back days in the sun. There are even options with distressing and frayed hems that lend itself to a more edgy style you can play up with combat boots and a band tee.
Personally, this short style lends itself for more of a boho aesthetic. For example, this Catherine Boyfriend Short with a flowy off the shoulder top like the Chrissy Peasant Top, some espadrille wedge sandals, metallic bangles and a layered necklace for a comfortable, and sexy standout boho look great for a date at twilight by the pier.
Or if you are planning a full day at the beach, consider wearing one of your favorite plus-size swimsuits with shorts like these, be it using the top from a two-piece as crop tops or simply a one-piece as a bodysuit. The Andi Swim Malibu One-Piece for instance would be perfect for this, with an adjustable snap-front closure style and built-in full bust support. I mean is there anything better than a total effortless and versatile summer style that calls for no bra?
High Waisted Bike Shorts
Of course denim isn’t your only option for plus-size shorts this summer. If athleisure and leggings are more to your style, I highly recommend giving biker shorts a try this summer. They are just as comfortable and versatile as your traditional full-length leggings, only shorter. Great for those days when the thermometer goes higher than 70 degrees which is about when I start breaking a sweat without even trying.
Simply pair it with a loose-fit graphic top and some colorful sneakers. Or even with a fitted tank and an oversized third piece like a kimono.
Skorts
If you’re a fellow member of the chub rub club, skorts are a God-send, particularly those like the Christina High-Rise Skort from Girlfriend Collective. With lightweight shorts hidden underneath an outer skirt layer, these help protect against thigh chafing while also allowing for greater movement without worry of a possible wardrobe malfunction as the fabric moves with you. Also pockets big enough to carry your phone! Need I say more?
As for how to style these, the most popular trend this year has got to be pairing activewear shorts like these with a sports bra in a matching color to wear as a set. Personally I love pairing these with a sleeveless button front top, like the Diana Sleeveless Top, tied at the waist or a cotton knit halter tank with a cute pair of sandals for a chic, minimal vibe.
With longer days, and ever-rising temps, shorts are the must-have item for your summer wardrobe that you can never have too many of. Find your new favorite on Roth's Clothing.com!
