These 5 plus-size red-carpet ensembles are all winners in our book.
Though the Academy Awards are known as the event of the year for movie buffs and industry titans alike, the pre-show red carpet is also a performance worth catching for every fashion lover watching from home. It’s when Hollywood royalty turns out their best looks for fashion-correspondent interviews and the coveted best-dressed lists. While this year’s red carpet had an endless collection of praiseworthy outfits, these 5 plus-size ensembles were our winners of the evening.
All eyes were already on Melissa McCarthy thanks to her nominated performance in “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”. Though she didn’t secure the trophy, her chic black-and-white pantsuit designed by Brandon Maxwell was fit for a winner. (She even stopped fellow nominee Glenn Close in her tracks!) Plus, we got a hilarious nod to “The Favourite” in her presenter ensemble for “Best Costume Design.”
Oscar winner Octavia Spencer stunned in a sparkly gown created by body-positive fashion designer Christian Siriano (who also custom-designed the Billy Porter ensemble the internet can’t stop talking about). She may not have been a nominee herself this year—though she executive produced the Oscar-winning “Green Book”—but her glamorous red-carpet look deserves its own accolades.
Before Queen Latifah introduced the clip for the Oscar-nominated film “The Favourite,” the actress graced the red carpet in a black mixed-media dress custom-designed by Michael Costello. The addition of Chopard jewelry broke up the monochrome look with just a touch of glitz.
In another Siriano-designed gown, “Dumplin’” actress—who also appears in the Oscar-winning short “Skin”—Danielle MacDonald rocked the same bold hue as the carpet she posed on before the Oscars began. The classic silhouette was elevated by the sheer panels that skimmed her shoulders and draped along the bottom half of her dress.
In her first year attending the Oscars—and interviewing other celebs on ABC’s pre-show—plus-size model Ashley Graham took the road of classic old Hollywood glamour with a stunning mermaid gown by designer Zac Posen. The sleek-yet-simple makeup, hair, and jewelry let her gorgeous dress take center stage.
